I'm looking for a budget wheelset for my sister's TCR. She's a novice so something that rolls well and isn't too difficult to handle in a crosswind is nice. Preferably with wide rims as she'll be going to 25's when the current tyres are done.

In short;
- Cheap (up to 300€)
- Reliable
- Low-maintenance
- Aero

I understand all these come in small things as the contraint is the budget. Something like the Shimano RS-31 fits since it's also pretty good looking in that segment.

As for maintenance, a check-up & grease once a year is no biggie. If they run out of true and need to be regreased on a regular basis they are off-limits.

@ Mods, if there's a similar thread then plz merge it. :)

Read Steve's pages "in the know cycling". Just google it!

I think he would recommend Zonda's, which come in your budget.

Aero and cheap doesn't sound like the right words to put in the same sentence. The only thing that comes to mind is handbuild wheels with DT 460 rims.

Mavic Aksium are very good, durable and reliable. But not aero. They will be less than 300 euro.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

I've heard that Giant is selling their P-A2 wheels very cheap at the moment. That adds another option to the list. :)

Fulcrum 5 LG are 1645g and under 300 euros. Come with cup and cone hubs and have 23mm external rim width.

Any Giant dealer should be able to order them. They come as the standard wheel for the Propel Advanced series.

It's a fairly wide (haven't measured mine) 35mm high aluminium rim with sapim and basic hubs. Mine are on the winter bike now and have been stress-free with 25mm tyres. They look quite nice too, obviously no flashy Zipp or Enve looks at this pricepoint. :)

I've had fulcrum racing 7's for rain/winter wheels for three seasons. Probably 10,000 miles on them. They need new bearings in the rear, but are otherwise bombproof. Never been trued and still straight as ever.

Magic aksiums are great budget wheels. I've picked up sets, new, on eBay for $200 with tires. If you are willing to go used you can easily find an excellent condition $500 msrp wheel set for half price.

Aksiums are rubbish but stout.

If you can, save a little bit, and get Zondas. One of the best clincher wheels at any price.

My goto wheel set for not spending too much would be shimano RS81's. One of the best values out there.
Colnago C-59 (Dura Ace)
Firefly(Ultegra)
Colnago C-64 disc(ultegra) with Bora 35 wheels

I think OP wanted budget wheels, that are AERO. Anyone can find cheap durable wheels. The trick is to find cheap durable wheels, that are aero.

Pro-Lite Bracciano A42 for aero?

I'd still go with Zondas overall though.
