Ok. So my 404 was fitted properly by a shop and I have these observations about the REAR wheel positioning:
1) the wheel looks well Centered in the chain stay.
2) in the frame section where the frame meets the rear caliper the tyre clearance is as follows:
- drive side is tight!!! tyre is 1-2mm from touching frame.
- non drive side has loads of room circa 5 or 6mm.

Is this normal? I'm thinking I must be getting rubbing and losing ground as a result on the drive side.

Thanks

New bike? Check dropouts for paint and clean out.

Wheel properly seated in dropouts?

Not new? How are other wheels?

What does shop have to say?
There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?

One.

So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

Is the frame asymmetric where you're looking?

If it has rubbed, you should be able to see marks on the frame.

Wheel is seated properly.
New wheels new frame.
No idea isn't the clearance differences is normal?

Try a known good wheel and a known good bike, try reversing the wheel too.

Check for proper dish on the wheel. If you have switched free hubs (Shimano to Campy or 10 to 11 speed for example) the wheel needs to be redished. May not be your issue, but can't hurt to check.
