Do Tune MAG 170 freehub bodies notch?
Moderator: robbosmans
Even with the lockring correctly torqued, my cassettes tend to dig into the freehub body on my Williams System 30x wheels. I am now building a new wheelset and I would like to know if Tune freehub bodies will have the same problem as my WS30x freehub.
Thanks,
David
PS : Otherwise my Williams System 30x wheels have been absolutely bomb proof. Still solid and true 12000 KM later.

The newer MAG 170 freehubs aren't too bad. They're machined out of a fairly hard alloy relative to the older Mag 180s - in my experience, they have decent gouging resistance, as aluminum freehubs go.

All alloy freehubs notch fact of life. Get used it or buy hubs with steel or Ti freehubs. You could of course switch to campagnolo as campagnolo alloy freehubs dont notch due to the taller spines.
Or get one of the monoblock cassettes, eg. Sram xg or og.

The cassette will dig into the freebody material until it hardens to the point where it digs no further. This is about 0.1mm - 0.3mm in my experience. Not a problem at all.

Yes they will, bit it's not bad. It actually states this in the hub manual and says to file down any humps after it has notched.
