Thought I'd share my new custom training wheels. I've started to really enjoy wheelbuilding and have the basic tools. These will be going on my AX Vial Evo.

They went together well but I'm a little concerned how long the anodised coating will stay intact. They certainly are wide enough[emoji108] and look the business IMO.

Front:
H Plus Son Archetype anodized grey rim (24h)
BHS Superlight front hub
DT Aerolite black spokes
DT Prolock alloy black nipples
=680g

Rear
H Plus Son Archetype anodized grey rim (28h)
Alchemy ORC hub Campagnolo
DT Aerolite black spokes
DT Prolock alloy black nipples
= 800g

Total 1480g - not bad when the rims weigh 470g each [emoji482]

So far so good

With those hubs they would be classed as dry day wheels here. It summer here (nearly) and lashing it down with rain and cold enough for the heating to be on. Did i mention the wind we have got that too.

Wasn't that rear hub recalled, the Alchemy Orc-UL?

It's not an UL.
In fact I don't think a Campagnolo version of the UL was ever produced.

Mine is the original (correct , not UL) and wasn't recalled. They didn't have a Campagnolo body originally but I sent the hub back to Alchemy and for a reasonable cost they retrofitted one and replaced the bearings. Spins like a dream

Didn't know that about the Campy version not being produced. Just saw that it was listed as a UL up above before it was edited. Super nice wheels BTW, those are great looking rims.

Looks good and a nice weight! Can you meassure the diameter of the spoke hole? I really like to know it so I can order some veloplugs.

The yellows are too big, the red ones too smal to stay in the wholes on their own.
I had very unpleasant situation where on the quite short but very steep descent about 20% one of the plugs (red) was melted on the thin edges and pressed into the rim, kaboom and nusty slight on the tarmac, it was the fron wheel. After that I thanked veloplugs probably for good.

Any reason for going campy freehub? Personally I'd stay away from them because the cassettes are pretty expensive and 11s cassettes work very well across all brands anyway.

I use yellow velo plugs with them. A little pressure initially but go in and out easily now.
I use Campagnolo on all my bikes so it made sense. A Chorus cassette is reasonable and IMO lasts longer than anything else out there. I've used Ultegra on other wheels but having different brands seems a waste for just cassette.

Thanks for the information about the veloplugs. It will be the yellows for me.

Do your rims squeal under braking? A few friends have these hard anodized ones and the only way they found to stop the noise as to ride in the rain and wear off the anodizing.

Yes petal666 the anodized coating was reduced after only 2 rides (in the hills) so a few more rides and it'll be gone. But the gunmetal rim colour is still well suited to the exposed rim colour anyway.

No squealing at all.

Very happy with them so far

Doesn't take long for them to look like normal rims I guess.

Confirmed. The anodized coating on the rims has gone.
