Hey guys,

Normally I dont have a problem researching but it seems most people are building/buying a wheelset for a specific use on the forum. I just want advice on a wheelset for a build that will be used almost excusively as a recreation bike. A few trips to the shopping centre or a buddies and some longer casual rides- i have the goal to ride a century this summer but that will only likely happen once if at all.

I am 180-190lbs depending on the season since people seem to get a little more dormant in the Canadian winter.
I want the wheelset to be durable enough that i dont need to worry about them.
I would like to be able to service the hubs myself-i guess sealed hub bearings are ok.
I will be running Shimano 10 speed.
Budget is very very tight. I would like to keep the wheelset under $250 but I can likely wait and reach to $300.

Thanks,
Matt

Shimano RS10s would fit the conditions you give. Basic, cheap but serviceable

Are those wheels not built a little too light built for my weight? 16/20h spoke seems really low.

I bought Shimano RS11 for my Force22 when the weather is bad. So. Buy them, and you are insured for the future update to 11 speed :)

@Elrey,
similar to my above comment, don't you think that they would be a light construction for someone in the 180-190lb range? I have no idea my power output but strictly from a bump and weight perspective it seems like it could be fragile.

I would go Fulcrum/Campagnolo way (based on your preference). I'd say, bombproof wheels.
Campagnolo Zonda or Scirroco (35mm rim depth), resp. Fulcrum Racing 3 or Quattro

Thanks for the suggestions Martin, but those wheels exceed my budget mentioned in the OP. $250 preferred to $300 max

Cheers,
Matt

I'm 205 lbs and used there RS500 for cross 20/24 spokes. They lasted 6 months in mud, frost, snow and crashes. So i am pretty sure that the RS11 wheelset is going to hold up just fine for road use only. I am even gonna use my RS11 for summer CX.

Fair enough. I will consider them- they are in my budget.

Its just the 16h/20h that is concerning me.

Ah, I apologise, Matt. You mean dollars, not euros. I remembered it was possible to get Zondas under 300€, but didn't notice your currency.

If your interested in trying to build your own, I don't think you'll get better new wheels for under $300.

I was considering that setup actually Bomber but with the SLF81w front hub and laser spokes (though the spokes might be too light).

I have been talking to Brandon on the help line a few times and I was set on that, but it would be nicer to keep the price down even though the DIY route with that kit is still reasonable for the wheelset that it produces.

+1 on Shimano RS10/11's. 13000 km, potholes, crashes, bunny hops. Still going.
I'm 155 pounds though.
