Yet another climbing wheel ...
Moderator: robbosmans
Will be spending the entire summer in the alps or pyrennees and I'm currently on a wilier cento uno with campy boras. Not too keen on using the boras when it's windy at altitude, so have been looking for a good set of tubular climbing wheels. At the moment I have it down to:
Campy hyperon
Lightweight ventoux
Mavic r-sys slr
Zipp 202
I'm currently erring towards the hyperons as I have had faultless performance from the boras and they are a little more understated compared to the other two.
My question is which one? And have I missed any other wheels!?
Thanks in advance people.

If I was in your place, I'd probably get a Dura Ace C24 tubs or HED Stinger 3. The C24s can be found at a good discount, being discontinued for some time. Not that I've ridden any of those, but very much along the lines of your understatedness preference.

Campagnolo record hubs and Ambrosio Chrono rim with spokes appropraite for your weight and riding style would be my choice if you are running campagnolo drive train.
You can of course use the HG freehub body from a Bora or similar wheel (available as a spare) and fit it the record hub to get HG compatible record hub. Best of all worlds really.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I forgot to mention I was running campy sr 11, so the dura ace kit is out. Also there is no point going more than 30mm ish depth as I have my boras.
I'm running chronos as my winter / training / shitty weather wheels. The hubs are getting on, so I don't want to use them for climbing. I'm basically riding them till the hubs give up, but I don't want that to happen at 70km/h.
Based on my happy experience with the boras, maybe it should be the hyperons. I guess they would be a great compliment to the boras? Do people train on them too? They look like a wheel you would not want to take off the bike.
I'm a little concerned about the robustness of the ventoux. For some reason I think the hyperons would be a more robust option. After all its not just about the weight (shhhh). Is that a little naive?
Lastly I did some research on the Mavis's. there seems to be mixed real world experience out there. Some love them, some complaining about production defects.

Hyperons. However, if you're going to be spending the entire summer going up and down the Alps and you're only going to have one wheelset, then I might consider something like @bm0p00f suggests. If you're riding rain or shine, all conditions, there may be times when you wish you had something a little more "abuse friendly". Imagine descending in the wet and cold and grinding the crud into your Hyperons all day long. On the other hand, a nice set of alloy rims on Record (or similar) hubs might not be the lightest but they'd be pretty bombproof. I'm happy to carry a bit of extra weight up a hill knowing that on the way down my only limitation will be my riding ability as opposed to whether I can brake properly or if my wheelset is a bit underbuilt for my weight. I'm not a featherweight.

In terms of technology? What is that supposed to mean?
I think you meant to say overengineered. The R Sys wheelset is absolute garbage. Entirely proprietary designs along with the worst aerodynamic qualities make for an overpriced, overengineered big box wheelset that will drain your wallet.

All the wheels listed are.

Unlike the Ventoux?

They are not cheap. Nor are any other of the wheels listed.

Didn't know the new Mavic's had been tunnel tested?

I think we established you don't rate Mavic wheels. Here and other threads.
Tune hubs, ambrosio Chrono F20 - you can go full thortle downhill not to burn rims (that can easily happend to all composite low weight rims), no worry for rain, no headache when to service them (on holydas broken spoke can be replace in almost every bike shop), good price

I find the Ventoux extremely robust for my 79-83kg. Bad pavement, potholes, whatever... they are impressively strong. Hyperons are strong too, you'll never have a problem but my guess is that Ventoux are even stronger (unless you crash of course).
