Thinking about building a set of carbon tubbies, probably 38 or 50mm. I just acquired a set of the sweet silver Cmapagnolo Record hubs, and while I like 32 spokes on box section tubulars (and have a set of Nemesis on Campagnolo Chorus), I'm wondering if it's overkill and would be too harsh on a set of carbon rims. But if I used the Records I wouldn't need to buy another set of hubs.

Would you consider a set of 32f/r carbons? If so, when wouldyou consider them to be appropriate?

I think you'de be hard pressed to find a 32 hole carbon hoop.

IMO that is overkill. I'm 100kg and I've ridden 20/24 carbon hoops no problem.

Some Chinese manufacturers offer 32h options on their carbon rims.

I'd go 16h front radial / 24h triplet rear 2X:1X :smartass:

problem solved.

Hi teleguy57, I don't know how heavy you are but the rear build could be ... a 32H campag hub and 24H rim for a 16-8 3xDS, 0x/1xNDS lacing for a super light tubular build :)

Just noticed LouisN's post ... what LouisN suggested but 3xDS and 0x/1xNDS :)

Hi,

Problem is that these Record hubs do not support radial lacing. At least, Campa strongly advises against it.

I would consider a 32/32 build with the low profile carbon rims, but I have no personal experience with them. I don't see it being a horrible idea if you get a set from one of the more reliable sources people talk about.

If you are looking for a nice way to build those rims up (tubular), get some Velocity Escapes. It's a pretty light alloy rim and it's proven to be a good rim.

I did these a LONG time ago. Wouldn't repeat. They certainly were strong. Story was, I had the rims built up to CHris King ISO hubs for a disc brake cross bike (remember the Cannondale?). Sold the bike and had the wheels. Decided to just relace the rims for road use and sell the King hubs.

Eric, why is it you wouldn't build up the Zipps again? Too harsh?

What about Hed C2 tubulars 32/32? I'm shying away from them having seen a post referring to that build as "wagon wheels."

Hadn't really thought about low profile carbons. Would the primary difference between that a something like the Montreals or Escapes be weight (and cost)?

I'm probably over-thinking this anyhow:)

They were a bike harsh. That and you can't get 32 spoke Zipp rims like that anymore anyway. That was around 2004 or so.

For the road, I think Escapes will ride nicer than the Heds will. I haven't looked into the Chinese carbon rims for good or bad. I have other projects right now.
