I've been offered a set of Zipp 404 carbon clinchers(carbon braking surface), and it made me think of whether or not Zipp made 2 versions of this wheelset. I know of the current Firecrest version, but didn't Zipp make a full carbon clincher just before they made the switch to the Firecrest rim profile? Or has it always been the Firecrest?

Correct. The only differences in 404 firecrest clinchers are between the falcon grey and beyond black color schemes.

Always Firecrest. But possibly the earliest version can't be converted to shimano 11 speed, whereas the newer version can. Not sure of the precise reason why, but SRAM Australia seem to be saying that.

For Firecrest (they all had 188 rear hubs), the silver ones cannot take a straightforward freehub/axle conversion to go 11speed. however, they can be sent back to Zipp to have the whole rear hub changed out, for a little bit more $$.
