I was wondering what the difference in rim between the Shamal and the Zonda is weight wise and what their actual weights are if anyone has (I've heard that the 2010 Zonda is 550g). I've noticed that the Shamal is toroidal milled whilst the Zonda is just milled. Could someone shed some light on this (the campy site isn't very good and searching didn't yield too much) and how much extra weight does toroidal milling save?

What they are referring to is simply the tooling used to perform the milling. The three major cutters used in milling are flat bottomed end mills, ball nosed end mills, and toroidal end mill cutters. The tooling will NOT affect the weight in any way. What it can affect is the surface roughness and scallop height of the cuts. I propose that scallop heights are insignificant in this and really any application especially given the feed marks left in milling. This leaves surface roughness as the only variable that is affected by the tooling. Ball nosed end mills and toroidal end mills both generally produce roughly equivalent surface roughness measurements. Flat bottomed end mills will be much rougher -- but this is all relative and all three produce cuts that are pretty smooth to touch and sight.

This is probably way more than you wanted to know. In short, they are trying to make marketing claims based off of nothing.

the biggest differences between the wheels are that the shamal uses aluminum spokes, carbon hubs and ceramic ball bearings while the zonda uses stainless steel spokes, aluminum hubs and steel ball bearings. the weight diff is around 130 grams. 1440 - 1570. they are both great wheels.

I think Shamals are 1425g and my normal Zonda's about 1525g. Check the Campy website.
