i used instead of electrical tape, stan's yellow tape for about 2 inches around the valve hole, to prevent a flat caused by the sharp edges of the valve hole in the rim.

I used small strips of electrical tape over each veloplug, mostly because I was worried about any sharp edges puncturing the tube. I'm sure it would've been fine otherwise, but I'll take a few grams penalty for some peace of mind. Still lighter than standard rim tape I believe.

then in that case, wouldn't it be lighter if you just use the electrical tape and do a couple pieces on top of each other instead of velo plug?

No, electrical tape isn't strong enough to hold up to the pressure from the air in the tubes. It's a bit weak.

Frankly putting electrical tape over the veloplugs is overkill: not only are they already a tight fit (and won't come out easily), the air pressure holds them in place as well. Electrical tape then just adds nothing of value, only weight.

Alternatives to veloplugs:
Rox rim tape (but you'll need two layers)
Small pieces of strapping tape (the type with fibre strengthening in the tape)

I put electrical tape over my veloplugs only to make sure that any sharp edges didn't puncture my tube, as they're a tight fit because FarSports drills their spoke holes to 7.5mm. A little peace of mind with almost no weight penalty IMO.

I'm thinking about picking up a pair of 38mm rims. I have a set of extralite hubs and w/ cx-ray spokes the set will probably come in somewhere around 1200g, probably a bit less.

ok.. just emailed kyle.. going to pick up both sets: 38mm and the 50mm.

quick question to all current owners.. as i followed this thread.. i recall reading the brake pads use to be blue and now yellow? what's the difference between them or is it just color preference?

blue are similar (same?) as Reynolds pads, likely they just phased out stocking those?

yellow are Swisstop brand.

different compounds, may behave differently.

I am going to switch the Black Prince pads when I get a chance.....folks have said very good things about them with these wheels.

I picked up some Reynolds blue pads and found that these brake much smoother than the ones supplied with the wheels.

well.. one of the reason why i asked is if the Blue > Yellow, then hopefully Kyle still have them available for my 2 sets.

another thing is.. can't i just use the pads that came with my 2013 SRAM RED?

Sure. You can use any old pads you want. But the braking will probably suck and they could damage the rims.

I'd use the Reynolds blue pads. Their perfomance is noticeably superior to the Yellows and they cost less.
