Hi
I'm about to press the trigger on my first set of carbon clinchers from Farsports, but just can't decide on which rim width to go for!
Weight is important to me, but so is stiffness & durability. I currently ride DA C24s that weigh 1380g and ideally I'd like wheels that are lighter for improved climbing, but they need to be just as durable as road surfaces here in the UK are not always great!

I tend to do long solo rides, flat, rolling and hilly (no real mountains) and fast group rides and weight 79kgs.

My shortlist are the FSC38mm 'U' 20.5mm profile with ED hubs that come in at 1250g
and the FSC38mm 'U' 23mm profile with ED hubs that come in at around 1350g

The 23mm rims are 100g heavier and I guess will feel similar to my C24s, but should be stronger, more rigid and better matched to 23mm tyres compared with the 20.5mm rims. However the 20.5mm should be more lively, accelerate quicker and climb better, but I just don't know how stiff/durable they'll be for everyday use.

Your thoughts, experiences and recommendations would be welcomed, Thanks.

I have both of the wheels that you are looking at. Personally the 23mm is now on my Scott 100% of the time and the 20mm sit in wheel bags. The 23mm feels better on the road, more meat on the street, I swear they are faster overall with flats and hills.

I liked the upgrade from 20mm to the 23mm, I am emailing with Kyle at FS on the 25mm U shape

I also have c24's which now are gifted to my wife;)

Hi oreoboreo

That's really interesting - so do you notice any difference in acceleration and riding long climbs between the two rim widths??

Also, what wheels do you have on your EVO? I have the 2014 hi mod too :-)

On the Evo I have HED Belgium C-2’s with Chris King hubs. When I do Century rides and Double Centuries I Put the FS Carbon clinchers on the EVO… free speed!

On climbs they really feel the same; the difference is the 15 miles before we get to the hills. Descending with the wider wheels shine and of course the 15 miles back to town.

How reliable is the 20/24 dt240s 38mm clincher for me 68kg rider as everyday wheel? Anyone on such setup, care to recommend?

Should be fine, I was 80kg during the summer and I have 3000+ km and 80.000m vertical on my 20/24 50mm tall set.

Incidentially, I also have a 20/24 24mm low-profile set on the way, but I had it built with heavier DS spokes (Pillar 1423) and 2x DS & NDS. I'm 78 kg now, however!

Apologies if this topic has been covered before, but what is the current consensus on the use of latex inner tubes with 38mm FS carbon clinchers? What are the Pros and Cons?

^shouldn't be a problem. Just don't use veloplugs with latextubes.

What's the problem with Veloplugs and latex?

Bit the bullet and ordered a new set of Carbon Clinchers from Farsport.

This time I went with a 23mm wide 50mm deep U-shape, with Sapim C-Xray spokes and DT240s hubs.

Compare this with my current set from "carbonspeedcycle (ebay)" which are 205.mm wide, 60mm deep with Powerray hubs and Mac CNC spokes.

I've never really had a bad experience with the Chinese wheels, having 2 sets already, one for each bike. But with the name brand hubs and spokes now available, I know I'll have a little bit more un-scientific confidence in them.

I'm very anxious (in a good way) to see what the new U-shape looks like.

A lot of people including myself have had several flats because of veloplugs combined with latextubes...

I read that some people use veloplugs and apply strips of electrical tape over the top to prevent flats caused by any sharp edges
