slightly off topic, but can someone explain to me how the 460g R-500 rim builds to a 1.8kg wheelset? Does Shimano use lead for it's bearings?
I write the weightweenies blog, hope you like it :)

Disclosure: I'm sponsored by Velocite, but I do give my honest opinion about them (I'm endorsed to race their bikes, not say nice things about them)

Good question. I'm wondering the same thing.

rims 460 x 2 = 920g
44 brass nipples ~40g
44 spokes ~220g

1180g without hubs.

According to http://www.realweights.com/index.php?modus=list&cat=33 an R500 wheelset is 1982g.

According to http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-FH-5700-1 ... 003RLHG9C/ an 105 rear hub is 353g
But this means the front hub has to be 449g! Imposible.

But http://www.realweights.com/index.php?modus=list&cat=43 has an R500 rim, listed as 511g.
Therefore ~1282g for 2 rims and 44 spokes and nipples. So both hubs must weigh in at 700g! :noidea:
