The original aim was to just quickly throw together some old parts when I used to race onto a cheap frame from ebay, but like all good projects I ended up going through a few iterations to get something nice. The starting point for the parts was early to mid 90s retro, not 1970s or earlier with down tube levers, toe straps etc as I'm not that old!

After much hunting I came across this Meckx frame, which I really liked. The workmanship and engraving looks great, then little details like the 'Made in Belgium' and the original bike shop sticker behind the seat stays are really nice.

The mix of Campag and Shimano is a bit odd, but the parts back then are all shiny so it fits together well and it's what survived from my race bike. Highlights of this build for me at least are the chrome, then fork, shiny hubs, perforated leather saddle, royce bb and spd-r pedals.

Ride wise, I only use it when I'm going on short rides (say upto 30 miles) when it's dry, so it generally doesn't get ridden all that far. Initially it feels like riding a truck, mainly because the saddle is wider between the legs than my Scratch on my other bikes and the stem is shorter. But after about 5 miles you forget about that and just sit back and enjoy the comfy ride. It feels a bit slower than a carbon wonder bike, but I was surprised to find that in a group it makes very little difference. The best bit though is that everyone asks about it, and thinks it's a bit special, whereas nobody cares about black carbon bikes which cost as much as a second hand car. Unfortunately we are thinking about moving to another country, so in the interest of saving space I probably should sell this.

Ah, I wax nostalgic when I see bikes like this. Very, very nice.
Were those Campy hubs rebuilt on different rims?

You need a Campagnolo Record (alu) crankset ASAP.

- No, these are the v1 original pre-built Campag wheels, before they went all matte black cost cutting on the hubs and started using semi-box section and off centre spoking at the rear. The hubs are pretty cool in that they have shiny outsides and grease ports, but take straight pull spokes. They have narrow steel axles rather than the wide aluminium ones on current hubs, so the hub shell is a sexy hourglass shape with a very distinctive waist. They are dead easy to maintain and roll very nicely.

The rims are box section and something like 20/24 spokes. They have a very comfortable ride, but are a bit soft and if a spoke breaks you are a bit screwed as the wheel can move far enough that it hits fully opened brakes. But unless you are racing that's rare - these are my second pair - the first died in a road race crash but was otherwise fine as an everyday wheel for many years.

Very nice classic bike! I agree you need a Campy crankset. A steel chromed Merckx fork would also be great for your ride.

Fantastic! Ever consider a WW seat for that era... might make the ride more "apples to apples".
Which country? I've moved between 3 in the last 3 months, and still one final move to go. I discovered that 'Bike Boxes' are one of the more affordable ways to get your stuff on an airplane. Airline policies vary however, so do your homework. I ended up bringing 2 'Bike Boxes' but actually only had one bike. Price, volume, weight.
Can't you find a way to bring it in tow?

Croce d'Aune delta's as opposed to Record delta's. Delta refers to the triangular shape of the brakes, not a groupset.
