Winter time, snow, no riding. How boring. Looking out the window right now, this is what I get to see:
Image

But on the bright side the post man has been dropping goodies off at regular intervals these last weeks, and the parts for the new build are coming together nicely. But instead of dumping the whole build on you at once, I'll follow the tradition of the advent calendar and show something new every day. By 24 December all parts should be here, but the build may not (yet) be complete... tbd.

A few hints:
  • The name relates to the intended use, but not in competition
  • It should be a light build, but hopefully practical
  • The frameset is not well known and for testing
  • The build will involve some targeted modifications
  • Inspiration and help has been enlisted by a board member who made a particularly popular build this year.

Without further ado, the first (very small) parts:
20 spoke washers (Pillar), front wheel:
Image

24 spoke washers (Pillar), rear wheel:
Image

20 alu nipples (Pillar), front wheel:
Image

24 alu nipples (Pillar), rear wheel:

Total weight of components so far: 20.4 g :D

Stay tuned for the next update tomorrow...

Cheers
Jever

Second day and we 'open' the second door:

In line with the purpose of the bike I have chosen some low profile (20mm) carbon clincher rims. The weight is pretty decent, let's hope that they are stiff enough to stand the abuse I will throw at them:

Front rim: 348.8g, 20 holes
Image

Rear rim: 346.1g, 24 holes
Image

Sum of component weight so far: 20.4g + 694.9g = 715.3g
----
At the moment, I can't quite decide between two pedal options.

1. Egg beater 2Ti 2010 + Ward spindles: about $220, ~170g, but with bushing and old body design
2. Egg beater 3 2011 + Eard spindles: about $160, ~218g, but with needle bearing instead of bushing, and newly designed body (no play, better protection against the elements?)

The reason I will go with egg beaters is that I am using mid foot cleats.

What would you recommend? I am tempted to go for the 2ti, since I had no problems with my old SLs, they look cool, and the weight is pretty sweet.

Some more important parts arriving today or tomorrow, so things will pick up a bit ;).

I have the 3's and the bearings are nice and smooth.

@KWalker: thanks for the tip, I'm still kind of tempted by the lightness of the 2ti + Ward spindles I must say...

Back to the build. Waiting for the post man is frustrating, especially when you know that the frame is so close, but it refuses to arrive. The post office tracking page is not my friend these days:
Image

So, moving along slowly, the spokes for the build (the hubs are also on their way):
Front spokes: 19x Pillar Xtra 1422 white, 1x Pillar Xtra 1422 black: 109.3g
Image

The rear wheel will be built in a crow's foot configuration, with 3 of the "crows' feet" in white, and one in black. NDS will be 2x.

12 NDS spokes, white: 66.6g
Image

4 radial DS spokes: 21.6g (I should have put 3 whites ones and a black one, which would have dropped the weight to about 21.4)
Image

8 crossed DS spokes: 43.5g
Image

...which brings the total component weight to 956.1g (109.3g front wheel spokes + 131.5g rear wheel spokes + 715.3g existing components)

Post office just confirmed the frame will not come in today, but only on Monday. So cannot pick it up before Tuesday. Hooray.... NOT!

@Adamd: Rims are from farsports.cn.

@Stolichnaya: how do you think I feel waiting for all those parts that don't arrive :(

Since the Post office snafu threw things off track a little bit, I have to keep things slow and bridge the weekend with some less interesting parts. But promised, soon some important parts will be revealed!

Getting further on the wheels, here are the tubes and tires. Going clincher for training.

Michelin latex tube, front: 80.8g
Image

Michelin latex tube, rear: 85.7g
Image

Front tire: Veloflex Black in blue: 184.1g
Image

Rear tire: Veloflex Black in blue: 211.0g
Image

The tires don't really fit in the color scheme, so I am looking for other ones in the same price / quality range. Any recommendations?

Component weight to date: 956.1g + 561.6 = 1517.7g

Projections have the bike at 6500g complete with pedals and bottlecages. Not happy with that at the moment!

wow major weight disparency between the front and rear tires, is there a rear specific? In that same price range, I guess you could go Ultremo? Or GP 4000s but they are heavier.

Where are the hubs??!?!

cool post

Sorry for the delay! True, the tire weight is quite different, I will have to see if I can't get something better.

Next the BB and crank:

Cannondale SI arms with SRM spider: 501g - to be anodized in black soon
Image

Cannondale SI crank bolts: 16.4g
Image

FSA chain rings 39/53: 165.5g - to be changed against some other chain rings - maybe Rotor?
Image

Titanium chain ring bolts: 16.0g
Image

Cannondale axle: 64.6g
Image

This whole setup may well be temporary, in case I go wireless...

Weight of today's components (circlips, bearing covers, and spacers missing): 763.5g
Total weight to date: 1517.7g + 763.5g = 2281.2g

This is fun to watch. Red nipples look sweet i think gold would look even sweeter with the white spokes
