Show me your Winter bikes

Not quite a winter bike. More of a commuter/workhorse.




It was built on a VERY tight budget. I needed a quick rolling bike to get to work. I was sick of public transport! I only had €700 to spend. I also had a retired XC bike to use as a donor for some parts. It has a single front chainring and only a front brake to keep weight low. The frame has had all brake mounts removed, cable mounts removed and it as been sanded down to natural aluminium. I managed to get over 120g off the frame and it looks quite elegant now. I estimate the weight at about 9.5KG but I havent weighed it yet . I plan on taking about 2KG off it eventually

Crank: Shimano XT M760 hollowtech 2 (Taken from the XC bike. The bolts for the inner ring were stripped so it was perfect for a single ring application)

I love this bike as it has been so reliable so I am going to treat it. Conti Grand Prix 1" and Maxiss Flyweight tubes are on the way. It should drop about 800g or rolling mass over the Tiogas

Future plans include
Chris King hubs, Pace RC31 forks, crank brothers titanium axles, Ti non-QR wheel skewers and some light finishing equipment. I also want to tune alot of the equipment that is on it now

Mavic Ksyriums with IRC redstorm wet tyres
Ultegra/105 groupset
Keo carbon pedals
Specialized carbon seatpin with toupe 143mm saddle
Pro PLT 11cm stem with PLT bar

I've done over 5000 Scottish winter miles on this bike since i bought the frame/fork at the start of last winter. Frame is still almost as good as new, and is one of the more comfortable aluminium frames I have ridden.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could post up photo-illustrated (not from a distance) solutions that you used to mount full guards to a standard racing frame with no eyelets.

I could not get on with race blades at all and resorted to chopping them up for a MTB rear shock guard

This winter i will mostly be riding (when my back lets me!) my Cannondale 1FG with Rohloff. Gives much better views than on my turbo :0)

Stern that is really nice, odd, but nice. Carbon cranks on a CX bike? and downtube shifters! Recipe for a face full of grass if you ask me ;0)

My winter/foul weather bike...ss conversion Lemond. I'll never sell this frame as it was my first bike I regularly raced on, plus it's the last year LeMond was made in Italy with Columbus tubing.

Build is basic and random...
Original Shimano600 brakes, STI (dead) levers, cranks, hubs.
Matrix rear rim, Mavic CXP 23 front rim.
The stem looks odd, but is comfortable as I'm not on the bike as much in the winter, so I'm not as flexible or strong.
Nothing else really exciting, but it brings a smile to my face everytime I ride it.
