I bought this frame to replace my CAAD9 as a secondary bike. The plan is to strip the CAAD of parts and move everything over to this (saving the seatpost, as I need to go from 27.2 to 31.6).

It's a Z5 SL M/L Tall. The history of this frame is that it was painted by Joe's Bicycle Painting (the shop that does Calfee's work) by the prior owner after about 1k miles. It hasn't been built up since the paint job.

It appears to be in really good shape if a bit more portly than an unpainted SL. It's very blue.

Image

P.S. Ignore the fence in the background. That's my neighbor's idea of "artisanal" wood.

Crankset

Okay, so when I say "budget", I really mean "stuff I already have lying around", as I think running an SRM takes me out of the budget category.

The crank's a ROTOR 3D+ SRM 50/34. Total weight for the crank and spacers required to run it with a BB30 BB is 695g.

Code: Select all

Drive side ROTOR 3D+ SRM 172.5mm w/ Praxis Works 50/34 Clover Rings - 427g
Non-Drive side ROTOR 3D+ 172.5mm Arm w/ retaining ring - 250g
Spacers for PF30 fitment - 13g
Bearing shields - 5g

Total : 695g

I better get my butt in gear!

I was delayed by the fact that the Z5 has a 31.6mm seatpost, whereas the CAAD has a 27.2. Makes "moving parts over" a little more challenging.

More pics and weights this evening and tomorrow. I'll have it built tomorrow (albeit with the wrong sized stem).

Cockpit and Seating

I don't yet have a final stem, so I didn't weigh the temporary boat anchor (an Oval Concepts 110mm). The rest, however, is tried n' true. I'm building this up to be a secondary bike. It'll spend time on the back of the car traveling hundreds of miles on family vacations. I want stuff that's durable, and ENVE has proven durable.

Code: Select all

ENVE 31.6mm zero-setback seatpost w/ hardware - 225g (this could be cut down *a lot*)
No Name seatpost clamp and bolt - 16g
ENVE 110mm stem - 115g (w/ two bolts)
ENVE Garmin Mount - 28g (w/ the *other* two bolts)
ENVE 42cm compact road bar - 209g
Fizik Arione 00 saddle - 151g (they *never* hit their claimed weight but fit me)

Hydration

I've been using Arundel Mandibles for over 10 years, and they are simply the best (IMHO). I've developed muscle memory for getting the bottles in and out, and they've never ejected a single bottle.

The bolts I have, well, it turns out they're a tad heavy:
Arundel Mandible 1 - 29g
Arundel Mandible 2 - 28g
Water Cage Bolts (4) - 13g

Nice build. I think you will like the ride on the Z5SL.

I confess that I have it built but need to post a picture. It does ride beautifully.

When I had the Z-Zero built, Parlee messed up the first time and had to build a second frame. They sent me a Z5SLi while I waited, and I remember thinking that it was an amazing bike. I truly think the Z5SL is 95-99% of a Z-Zero at 1/3rd (or, at this point, 1/10th) the price.
