We, the moderators, had a lengthy conversation and decided it was better to lock all of the "all specialized tarmacs", "show us your TT bike", "The WILLIER thread" kind of topics.

The reason for it being that we rather see a thread on each and every bike. It can be simple with a picture of your finished build and a build list. Or take us through the steps like Kwalker, RyanH and Bely have done. Nathanong87 started a thread and then chose to update it. this can also be a way. (he really needs to give me his head set cap. I love it!)

Interaction makes things fun! I had the same experience when sanding and lightening my addict R4 back in the day.

For now, thanks for your understanding.

I do not think that's a good idea... There are many members who would like to buy a new bike or update the bike they have and look for specific brands and models to see photos and get ideas.
There are many other issues that you could spend time and energy related to our forum IMHO.

I'm not at all sure what end result you're trying to achieve with this decision or why it even became a topic that needed a decision in the first place. Look at the "Steel Bikes" thread. Or the "Pictures of Colnagos" thread. Lots of people have nice bikes that we'd like to see, but the owners may not necessarily have the time or inclination to produce a complete build thread for them. And it seems that for most of the bikes that do warrant their own thread, the owners have created one. These threads rarely generate the heated battles that sometimes arise in other threads so that's really not an issue either. This decision is a bit of a head scratcher for me.

Im actually in the "yay" camp. When I first saw this post, I was surprised, but it seems like there has been a larger volume of unique, quality threads lately and I easily enjoy those more than the combined threads. It's hard to say for sure if this will encourage or discourage more threads to surface but I think it's worth the attempt in hope for the former!

I agree that a quality build thread is great, but I think the people that produce or want to produce those threads will do so regardless. I don't think it will encourage the people who just want to flash a pic and get out to go to even more effort to produce a build thread. More likely they will just not flash a pic at all, even though they may have a totally pic worthy bike to see.

I also agree with kgt and Calnago that this is a poor decision by the mods.

Limiting the way people interact in a forum and putting how we can post and where we can post in a small box is detrimental to a forum where you say you want to encourage more discussion. Not everyone wants to create a thread about their bike and just want to throw a picture in a "steel bikes" "Cannondale bikes" or a "old Colnago" type threads. To say people have to only post in a certain manner will actually decrease the number of threads and discussion. Idiotic. Be more open minded, not more close minded. Be more open to letting forum members (that actually make this a community) interact in the manner they see fit rather than the manner you see fit.

There are much bigger issues for mods to take care of than this if he guys have a bunch of free time on your hands and are looking for stuff to keep yourself busy. Bring back the specific gallery threads. Forum was just fine with those.

I'm okay with this. I feel like there's only one or two actual build threads these days and encouraging new users to post and spec their bikes results in more engagement. There are plenty of other places for bike porn, I come here to keep up with the latest tech

Also want to add that the moderators' role is probably not the most rewarding in the world and overall I think they're doing a fine job.

It's a good idea to encourage more individual build threads, but I don't think the general threads should be locked. We want content and engagement, this could have the opposite effect.

Why not change the Starbike reward system from post-count to posting a dedicated build thread with weight list? Something along those lines - permit general threads, reward detailed build threads.

I did a build thread, but it was a lot of work.

I posted all my other bikes in the appropriate collection threads, but with that option gone I don't have a place to post them :/

I tend to have a two sided arguement to this... hope the moderators hear me out..

For the argument siding with moderators. A show and "no tell" is a bit of a dead end street and I've seen those types of builds come and go... I guess that I'm probably a bit guilty of this myself but it only takes "1" reply...a reply that says "Great bike, can you show us a full build list" and that alone will be enough to spark its own thread. You'd be surprised that this type of attrition occurs more than you think.

For the "bundled show" supporters, I sometimes detest the search feature when I want to simply "scan" the builds and aesthetics of others. Entering "C60" or "Time" will often yield what I believe static results that is often "irrelevant" to my demands. Having a "show me your" thread amalgamates that into what I think is pure time efficiency. Content and engagement can often happen in strange and magical ways...sometimes expected, sometimes out of the blue...blocking only limits the channels by how new and interesting threads pop up.

I guess what is "constructive" can only be defined by the viewer, but everybody needs to find a point of "construction" and having these types of threads acts as a great starting point.

I loved the "Fan"-threads. Not every bike needs its own thread.

Why didn't you ask the users about their opinions (in a poll)?

Shame that, as I followed the Colnago thread - if it's not for a site performance issue, then leave as it was I say :beerchug:

What a shame, I enjoyed looking through the "show us your ...Ti Build... type threads" as you can see a collection of similar bikes and see what everyone has done. I think they only complement peoples detailed build threads.

Maybe it would be better to insist that everyone with a build thread had a link to it below their picture.
