I do the California cross because when the derailleur cables come out of the aerofly handlebars it's quite the kink to get them back to the "correct" side downtube opening. But letting them go across to the opposite side its a much smother transition. To combat any friction in the downtube I put a piece of cable guide on each cable up the downtube so when they cross the cables don't actually rub against each other.
