Thanks Kevin! That would be fantastic.

I just got my carbon rods in the mail. They feel light. I think I will save a couple grams and break 50 grams with the pins alone. I love these tiny incremental gains.

@craciunptr - you read my mind. The rear derailleur spring is longer. I could save an extra gram. Lol

I got the carbon rods in the mail. They are custom made Toray 1100 carbon fiber from Japan wrapped in aerospace Boron carbon. Just kidding. It is from a hobby store online for $12. I think it is used in RC drones for added support or maybe even kites.

5 grams for these steel pins. There are actually 4 but I am starting off with 3. Lots of opportunity for weight savings here.

Image

I cut these out and dremeled the channels. The 3 don't even register on the crappy scale. This is a win!

Image

A closer look at my amateur handy work.

Image

Every gram counts. I can shave this bolt down.

Image

Yay. Doesn't register on the scale. Another "W"

Image

I broke the 50 gram mark without the Fibrelyte front plate.

As mentioned earlier, there is a 4th pin which is the longest in length and weighs almost 3 grams. I can save a minimum of 2 extra grams if I replace it. The only tricky part is the steel pin I need to replace is secured with micro sized C-clips. So, making channels for these little C-clips in the carbon will be a royal pain in the buttocks. I already cut the rod to the correct length. Now I need a micro sized saw to cut the channel.

Your handiness with the dremel is getting impressively good. You need a better resolution scale for something like this. They're like $12 on Amazon for one with precision down to 1/100th of a gram.

Thanks Ryan. Yes I definitely need a more accurate scale. I will be getting one. I ordered an assortment of 300 C-Clips online. I will find one from that batch that will fit the last carbon rod. The weight of the 2 C-Clips won't register on the scale. So, as of now I have the weight down to 46 grams. Hopefully another 2 or 3 more grams with the Fibrelyte front plate.

Now, this back plate is massive in weight. Lots of opportunity to drop weight here. It is 4mm thick. I wonder what a carbon back plate would weigh?

Probably half the weight, carbon density is 1,7g aluminium is 2.7g also bare in mind carbon is 10x tensile strength so less is required

I just checked and I have a perfect piece of scrap plate. It's 3.85mm thick. You can have it.

Kevin you are the best. Thank you so much. I believe I can the hit low 40 gram range with the back plate. Can I stop by some time to pick up the plate and drop off my handle bar and stem?
