Hi, I'm Damon.
I'm an old weight weenie, old enough to remember when Kwan Seng Lo started the web page "weight wennies" (yes, spelled with two "n"s, not two "e"s), using the list of component weights I'd gathered (by hand!) when I used to work at Kestrel in the late '80s, and typed into my PC around 1995 when the internet was "that big" (that's to say, not very big at all). Makes me happy to see hundreds of individual parts still listed on this site that I personally weighed. I used Kestrel's gram scale, in the R&D department downstairs from my cubicle. No one I knew owned their own gram scale back then.
Thanks to you guys, for keeping the spirit going in this forum all this time!
Anyway, I just got a deal on this bike, without wheels. I stuck my Kinlin alloy clinchers on (with Powertap rear hub) and got 8.500 kg (no pedals, cages, seat bag, etc.).
My plan is to strip the 105 group off and install my SRAM Red 10 speed parts (from another bike) to build this up lighter, on the cheap.
What do you think?
P.S. Sorry for the stock photo, but the room was too dark tonight to snap a picture myself. My bike looks literally exactly like this, only with my wheels.

Cheers,

I also had to check the calendar.
Very nice to have you (back) here Damon.
I like the 'ex-Velomax' statement in the signature.
I just serviced my ancient Velomax Orion II tubular wheelset and those wheels still runs strong.

Any Cannondale aero bike planned soon?
Minimum bike categories required in the stable:
Aero bike | GC bike | GC rim bike | Climbing bike | Climbing rim bike | Classics bike | Gravel bike | TT bike | Indoors bike

Hi Damon. Nice bike, although you would have raised more eyebrows if you posted a photo of the aero bike we all think you're drafting for your employer at some point.
For what its worth, my favorite wheels are still a pair of Velomax/LEW's from wayback. I know the world has moved on, but I dig 'em.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Just stripped the parts off my frame tonight. My 2016 Cannondale CAAD8 weighs 1481 grams in my size 58, including all the small parts (SP clamp, BB cable guide, etc.). Not bad considering the value price level the CAAD8 is sold at. Compares favorably to the old frames I have in my own component weights spreadsheet:
YEAR, FRAME, SIZE, GRAMS
1999 Cannondale CAAD4 58 1430
1998 Cannondale track 58 1480
2016 Cannondale CAAD8 58 1481
2000 Litespeed Ultimate 57 1604
1997 RedLine Conquest cross 58 1650
2000 Fort RO aero 2000 58 1930
Interesting to me the three Cannondales are so close. You might say we haven't come that far in all these years, but when you remember these weights were for top of the line frames back then I'd say the modern CAAD8 is a pretty good value.
What do you think?
P.S. You might think me posting about my CAAD8 is a marketing ploy, and I guess to an extent it is. But regardless, if you like, you can follow along as I explore a current product from my new employer. This really is my personal frame, I chose it and bought it myself (yes, we get a good employee price!). -DGR

Thanks Stolichnaya, good to be (back) here.
Yes, Velomax! The excellent wheels brainstormed into reality by Clark Rassmussen, Bill Holland and Jason Lilly; bought and turned into a successful business by Brad Hunter; sold to Easton and morphed into their current wheel line.
Clark basically paid me to learn AutoCAD(!) in the evenings, as a student back in the mid 1990's, as I designed the R2 hubs. Might be the same hubs in your Orions!
Cheers,
Damon

I can neither confirm nor deny, LOL.
IF we were to do so (not saying we are...), what would you like it to be like?

Hi glepore,
Thanks, I'm liking this CAAD8 as well.
Not here to raise eyebrows, just another weight weenie trying to save enough grams I don't have to go on a diet, LOL.
Glad you like your Velomax/LEWs. I remember going over the spoke tension requirements as Brad wrote up the manufacturing instructions for the Long Beach shop where the three (or was it four?) people built all those wheels.
Cheers,
Damon

Thanks Frankie. Yep, I'm looking forward to saving some grams on a budget, and learning from the forum!
