NEW PROJECT - Campagnolo Athena EPS V2 internal battery

- The battery is almost perfect for the seat tube. Some electric tape to stabilize it.
- The reason I need additional help to stabilize the battery is because the seat tube water bottle M5 tap bosses sticks inside too much, the battery won't slide in at all. So it will just sit in the seat tube.
- Also, no extra holes for the charger port, so I'm routing the charging wire up.
- Also, I'm just using a M4x0.7x300 threaded rod as my battery tool, $5.0 USD. It gets the job done.
Image

- Battery fully seated now, the existing wire is just long enough for my frame.
Image

- That's the front derailleur cable hole, it needed to be drilled open slightly to fit the EPS wire plugs.
- The rubber grommet was found at the physical store of a big online shop at Colorado.
Image

- Plenty of working room
Image

- Another view
Image

- The hole right below the bar code is for front derailleur cable, it needed to be drilled open slightly to fit the EPS wire plugs.
- The lower hole is also an existing hole, not sure what that hole was for. Maybe bladder? Also had to be drilled larger.
Image

- Di2 Electric Wire Cover, SM-EWC2, for external routing
Image

- Di2 wire grommet. These may not work long term since they are design for smaller carbon frame hole opening. They don't stay on the drilled holes that well.

- Down tube routing

- Chainstay routing

- Head tube routing

Very nice, but I don't get the reason you route your cables externally. especially since you heve been brave enough to drill hole's in the frame already...

@Delorre

I'm brave enough to enlarge the existing holes, but I'm not brave enough to open up new holes. All the holes I'm using are holes that was already molded onto the frame. I just drilled them slightly open to fit the EPS connections.

Lovely! A little dab of black silicone (auto parts store gasket sealer) will secure those di2 grommets just fine for the long haul.

@rmerka, thanks for the tip! I do have larger ones that are relatively more secure, but MORE security is always better.

The Campagnolo Athena EPS front derailleur does not clear fat rubber... Bummer...

tubular measured 34mm tread to tread.

Happy you missed it. It is sitting in my garage with a new THM crank on it. Need to finish the build.

David

@ David, I think now you HAVE TO post a picture of your MUD with THM crank ! :)

Here is the finished product. Need to get over to Sedluk's to get the weight.

There is one of these on eBay right now, size 54. Even though it's not my size... I'm still tempted. I could make it work with a shorter stem, right!? Hah!

I'm not sure if 51cm MUD's even exist. Anyways.. someone buy it so I don't.

Why don't you just route the EPS cable on the non drive side of the head tube so it's hidden better?

R3 MUD 2012, in black, smallest is 54cm
R3 MUD 2013, in silver, smallest is 51cm

sedluk has (had?) one in 2013 51cm
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=116050&hilit=cervelo+mud

sedluk also had one in 2012 54cm before the 51 was available. It didn't look bad at all though.

Why does that matter? I don't get it. Doesn't matter now. EPS on this bike is a NO-GO due to the tire clearance. Campagnolo gotta do something about those gigatic front derailleurs.

Right now is Campy mechanical. I'm thinking about going to Shimano mechanical once the new Dura Ace 9100 front derailleur is available. Apparently compatible with me Shimano 6800 group. Major tire clearance improvement with the new DA!

What about eTap?

eTap would be an interesting choice. I'll wait for the hydraulic version to come out first if I do go that route. Plus, I'm concern with the large front derailleur battery limiting the tire clearance. It may be ok, but I can't be sure.

The project right now is Di2. Its front derailleur has the best tire clearance, plus, I already go the kit on hand :)
