I agree that there are potential weight-savings to be made in those examples, but I think it's about getting the balance between stripping weight off and having something that will really handle the heavy power output. Richard Bussell's bike is a pretty good example of that.

It's this balance that is shaping up my build - for example I could have a Recon cassette as a lightweight component but it's likely it wouldn't fair well with the racing efforts required.

Cool project. How much do the cranks weigh? I think the lowest hanging fruit right now would be to switch to Red BB30 cranks. They're very light for the price. You'll probably have to create a custom spacer to deal with the hidden bolt but I'm sure you could figure something out.

Would it be worthwhile to get a second gear clamp to center the cassette? That could potentially save watts with a straighter chainline.

How is it riding without hoods? Have you ridden any kind of distance on this?

@deek: Do you know how much the Red cranks weigh? I was considering a crank upgrade but maybe to allow running of a smaller BCD ring to save weight all round. Haven't really looked into this yet as want to get some other parts on the bike first.

@natefontaine: I've got another one as a spare and I think you're right - I'll have to experiment with the best way to run a split cassette!

@Budnz: I find no problem racing it without hoods. I wear gloves so it's good for about 10 miles before it gets uncomfortable. There's a bit of a gaping hole on the inside of the CX1 lever but it hasn't caused me any problems yet. When I'm out training/club rides I normally run it with hoods and drop bars, but no tape. Absolutely fine on the usual club run distances.

Thought I'd put up a parts list of all the weights. I'll update this as the build goes on.

The Red crank weighs 371g if my math is correct from this post.

So 38g of savings. Not as much as I thought. Not sure where that falls on your $/g threshold.

If you did want to use a small chainring, you could consider SISL or possibly even RaceFace NextSL arms with a direct mount chainring. I imagine both setups could save a bit of weight, but they're not exactly great $ per gram stuff.
