Hi guys, i bought myself a colnago C40 to try and build a super lightweight bike.
i am not going to give the weight of the bike yet but its around 7.3kg but i haven't completed the build (i am a student and have limited money to spend on my pride and joy)
the stats of the bike are:
easton ae90 slx clinchers
schwable schwalbe ultremo zx tyres
KMC X10-EL Ti-Nitrate chain
campagnolo centaur front mech
campagnolo xexon rear mech
campagnolo xexon shifters
campagnolo centaur 12-25 cassette
campagnolo ultra torque centaur carbon crank 53/39
fizik arione r5 saddle
reparto corse brakes
reparto corse bars
stem i am unsure
the seat post isnt colnago its a 31.6 seat post that i turned down into a 28mm

With a C40 in my hand and a limited budget I would focus on ride quality and fit rather than weight.

it rides superb for an older machine just found a colnago c40 seatpost but its in belgium but its worth the money.
I agree. The ride of the C40 is great. Think it was better than my current C50. However, neither is a light bike; you won't ever make it a real WW bike, so don't kill yourself (or your wallet) trying.

im not trying to make it the lightest bike in the world but i do like the whole challenge of shaving weight of things. the bike is brilliant and the amount of times it has been mistaken for a steel bike is unreal.
Hi Tom, very nice looking machine....
Any reason why you wouldn't go 27.2 seatpost and a shim? That's what i did on my C50 and it looks and rides great??
Lig.

Thanks michel, the c40 and the master olympic ride very similar but the c40 rides better but only on the climbing advantage. Lig I love having all the pieces for the bike and the last resort is a shim and a 27.2 carbon seatpost but I have luckily found an original carbon c40 post which is on its way from Belgium. Will post pictures of the bike with the new post when it arrives.

+1 I'm currently building a C50 my self and with the price of 28mm Colnago post on ebay starting at $150 is not wise, I'm getting a Deda 27.2 post with the custom made shim at work since it's also hard to find a shim for the 28mm seat tube.

Loved my old C40. Not very stiff by today's standards but in terms of ride quality it was off the charts!!! Miss that old Mapei bike.

+1 if money is at all an issue then a light C40 is not going to give good results. Also the mix of parts will probably spoil the look of the C40 and take away from the frame.
Instead I would recommend using your time to put together something that people with more money but less time will not be able to do. That means building your own low profile wheels with nice tyres, then piecing together a good quality period groupset like DA7700 or 10 speed Record. Then you will have a 1990s pro quality bike which will get a lot of attention as well as riding better than 99% of bikes today.
