given I have a hardtime finding a super low stack headset cover, I thought I'd try a homemade solution.

I know some people run their stem right on the headset top bearing. I had a headset rubber seal lying around so I tried something interesting, using the rubber seal, some thin steer tube spacers and some cannondale BB30 plastic shims. The shims are not the same diameter then the steer tube, a bit larger, once centered and the stem tightened down, I think it should work out nicely.

Here is how it looks

From top to bottom: 1 plastic shim, rubber seal, 1 plastic shim, 3 metal spacers

stack height looks good

Interested to see how it goes. My only concern would be the plastic shims need to be compressed enough not to develop any play in the steer tube/headtube area.

Check out FSA Micro Headset spacers. They are metal and designed to go under top caps that rub on frames - should work better than plastic ones for you.

check out the first pictures, the 2 bottoms parts are actually 3x thin metal spacer, like the FSA ones, the plastic shims actually serve as improving the seal capacity of the rubber seal.

oops, I somehow missed the part where you said metal spacers and thought they were all plastic.

Looks great! :D

Understated yet racey and I'd imagine looks even better in the flesh.

Would you normally prefer to have more saddle to bar drop? Along with the cost of investing in new wheels/ tyres/ etc, the bar height is something I'm not sure I could live with on a 29er. How do you find it (assuming no change in position to your RM)?

Let's have a full spec list and get rid of those pesky 40g's! :D

Hey Dan!

yes I will be switching the stem for a 90mm one, this one is 100mm. I need to shorten it because the top tube is 13mm longer then my RM. The stem will also be -25d. My option is the Ritchey c260 -25d. This should bring the head tube about the same thing as my RM which used the -17d stem.

The bike is pretty light for what it is. There is no real WW parts on there. Going single ring I could save over 500g but not sure it is worth it, as it is a race bike and I want my race datas.

Looks great! Nice race build. That SRM is killing it for weight though (and a Shimano/SRAM mix :( )... if you want the data I guess you need it though.

Regardless, very cool, very reliable. it's nice to see others racing on steel.

Some ideas for those 40g's (I know you might have considered or discounted some already)

Seatclamp > Mt Zoom -12g (works much better than it looks it should!)
Fork Bolt Thru > Tune or Extralite -Unsure (what is the weight of the original is, Tune is 41g)
Stem > Something 110g -23g
Bottle cage > SMUD carbon -23g (again, works much better than it looks it should!)
Jockey wheels > Aerozine Ceramic -20g (cheap on ebay)
Chain > KMC X10 SL -20g (again, available cheap on ebay)
Pedal axles > Ti -50g (cheap on ebay)
Chainstay protector (assuming neoprene and ~12g) > Small section of adhesive neoprene -10g

All cheap, functional and not replacing anything you have heavily invested in such as seatpost, bars or wheels for example

DanW

Thanks for those suggestions. Current chainstay protector weights 7g (road bratape). I may check some of these but before I really need to fix 2 fit issues

1- a low stack headset cover. The slam that stem ones seem unfindable at the moment, to ship to Canada.

2- a 90mm -25d stem, most likely ritchey c260 stem. If you guys have any other stem suggestions, go ahead.

moshinho

actually pretty comfortable! I did many long rides on this saddle including a 7h ride, a lot of XCO races and a few XCM races too.

I think I saw it mentioned elsewhere, but have you thought about a Veloflyte headset cover?
