A friend of mine has this frame I'm considering. Seeing that there are many Colnago aficionados on this site I could do with some advice on what fork and seatpost to use. Anyone know seatpost diameter?
The fame is a Colnago Dream made with Columbus Airplane alloy tubing with the BStay carbon seat stays,
Groupset has to be Campagnolo and I will be using a San Marco Regale saddle as I use these on all my bikes.
Choices are modern retro build or a period correct build.
Ideas and advice welcome

There's a guy i know of selling a Colnago Star full carbon 1" fork if that suits. Came of a C40.
PM me for details.

Seatpost size is the ordinary 27.2

the matching fork at the time was the 1" Colnago Flash, Carbon legs, aluminum steerer.

A 1" Colnago Force ( carbon steerer bonded to carbon legs ) or a 1" Colnago Star ( full one piece carbon ) would also be nice for it.

aftermarket forks like the Look, Time or Mizuno 1" have also the appropriate rake for it.

Anyhow, having owned 2 Dreams in the past I have to tell you, the frames are pretty, have the same Colnago geometry as the C40, and are less uncomfortable than other Aluminum frames of the time, but don't expect the fabled Colnago ride from it. It is Aluminum and was anyway a lower cost alternative at that time too.

I'd say if you get frame and fork for a good price is nice to have, but I won't invest a lot of cash on finding an expensive fork and restauring it.

I had a Colnago dream a few years ago and it was a really enjoyable frame. Columbus airplane is a fine tubeset, and it rides great for an alu frame.

You just need a pair of high quality wheels and tires and you' ll love it.

Very nice. Look forward to seeing you build this up. Colnago has always been on my short list if I ever add to my quiver of bikes. ;) Stunning frame.

Personally I would NOT consider the frame for a good build. The rear dropouts are obviously starting to corrode, a common problem with the B-Stay and HP B-Stay frames. In time the aluminium will fall apart all together and it will also destroy the carbon as well, because it expands during oxidizing.

@ 53x12 - this will only unfortunately take shape in the new year. I have just finished rebuilding my custom Reynolds 653 frame last Friday, which with a custom repaint, new Chris King hubs, bb and headset and hand built wheels cost a fair bit, and to top it off, I built up a 2014 Trek Madone 5.9 as a training / crit race bike 2 weeks ago funds are low.
I am thinking of having the paint chips repaired, and the seatpost, stem and seatpost custom painted to match, and getting custom bar tape and seat recover to finish it off.

@SWijland - Thanks for the tip. I will have the frame and dropouts checked before a rebuild. It's great to get advice from someone with experience rebuilding older bikes. Something I'm pretty new at

No need to have the dropouts checked out for corrosion, I can tell they are badly corroded already just by looking at the pictures.

Colnago made a mistake in the design of their HP and B carbon stays, which made them prone to galvanic corrosion. You can have the dropouts replaced, but I doubt the cost is worth it.

@Swijland: I have heard of corrosion issues with the C40s but admittedly don't know much about it. Can you elaborate a bit. And how did they resolve it, if they did? Was it a bonding issue? I'm curious to understand this a bit more since I've run across it from talking to people several times but have never experienced it or seen if first hand. Thanks.

A friend has a Dream. I'm going to check out his dropouts closely next time I get a chance.

They did not resolve it, unfortunately. Not for existing frames anyway.

I believe the problem arose because they bonded the aluminium dropouts to the carbon without using anything in between, which supposedly is a perfect basis for galvanic corrosion. Although corrosion on aluminium itself is not something you should worry about (it stops as soon as the entire surface is corroded), the problem is that the corroded surface is bigger compared to non-corroded aluminium. As a result of this the carbon will crack ones the corrosion becomes bad enough.

True, that is already corroded.

I've seen that galvanic corrosion on CT1s, the "specialists" said it was because of the Titanium/Alloy/Carbon join

never on a later Dream or C40s, I guess it happens too. Maybe has more to do with the Hub axels, or how it was exposed to bad weather ? I say that because many Colnago enthusiasts I know, buy Dreams to use them as rain bikes and keep the C50s at home reserved for the sunny days.

Because the many B-Stays I have seen ( and I have seen many ) have gone 15 years without any problem
