Try finding a 11T or 12T cog with machined teeth and use the limit screw to keep the chain away from that cog. That is how I raced in the juniors, 11-25 cassette with 11, 12 and 13T machined, giving 14-25 and 7 speeds.
(our gear restriction was 7.93 m)

That's not a bad idea. It doesn't solve the issue of getting a spare wheel for him in the neutral car though. Very frustrating.

Why? Do all wheels in the car need to be 10 speed or something?

Update from race organisers is that this is all a misunderstanding. Kids in the younger age categories get no neutral support at all. If they flat or have a mechanical they are pulled from the race and given the same time as the last finisher plud 5 minutes. I'm not sure I like that rule but at least we don't have to worry about a bunch of spare wheels now.

That's awesome. What a great experience for him.

Stage race at age 10, superb!

There were roughly 1000 kids under age 18 at the race from all over the world. My son was the youngest in his category, but not the youngest at the race. There were a lot of fast little kids there. Great event.

Wow Ted sounds like an amazing event (and spectacle). Europe just does cycling on a whole different level. That bike looks fantastic too. Ryder's a lucky kid. My boy is just turned three but he's a balance bike champion and daredevil. We'll see if he keeps it up.

My 4-year-old is just about to transition from Strider bike to pedals. Almost there...

I have been following this thread very closely as my son is now 8 and riding my old 26" MTB that I have modified to be as short as possible. I am now looking at getting him a road bike. I just have to finish off my new build for the girlfriend who used to ride a Walmart 31lbs special and is now going to be on a 16lbs TCR build with APEX. It seems like I am about 2 years behind TED as I think he just built up a nice bike for his wife.

Check out Worx Bikes at http://worxbikes.com/. I think they have a good handle on youth bikes and the people behind the brand are really great. We met them in Assen. They sell direct. Prices are reasonable. Bikes are well-designed AND engineered. Definitely worth a look for your 8-year-old. The owner's son is 9 and absolutely killed in Assen... winning 4 of 6 stages and the overall.
