I had been using Shimano XTR PD-M780 pedals for cross but switched to the M980's when Shimano first introduced them. I really liked the increased size of the platofrm but despite Shimano's claims, I found that the pedals had a tendency to get plugged up making it all but impossible to get clipped in after a dismount in thick muddy cross conditions and switched back after 1/2 season. Conversely, the M980's are now on my single speed 29er and despite my attempts to destroy them in rain and mud while racing in 6 and 12 hour endurance races, the pedals still work well and spin smoothly.
