I have a 1999 GT richochet 7000 series AL 16" frame and wondering why my bike is so freaking heavy?

I've replaced the fork, wheelset etc..... Still one heavy bike!

Of course I could weight the frame w/ out components, but I'm lazy like that.

Anyone have an idea what this frame weighs? I'm trying to decide what to do next....

What do you mean heavy, is it when you carry it or when you're riding it?

A list of your bike's parts will help a lot for us to know where you need to start dieting the bike.

If it feels heavy while riding it, most probably your wheelset is on the heavy side.

Well the bike is heavy while carrying. I mean I was unloading my bike and
some others out of the auto and I noticed mine was the heaviest.

So I started looking to shed some weight:
after a wheel change(mavic x222/xt hubs) and fork(sid xc) I'm at 26 lbs

the following stuff is:
avid single digit v brake system
titec bar
azonic orc stem
lx shifters and de-railers
xt 9 speed cassette
250gr specialized seat
stock seat post
lx cranks
stock bottom bracket
s & m bmx pedals

I would like to shed about 3 more pounds and I'm wondering
if a frame change could get me headed in the right direction?

I've noticed most of the hardtail frames are listed at less than 4 lbs on the
listing site here, but frame is not listed. If my frame is say 5lbs then I want to pick up a lighter frame.

I suppose to figure out my frame weight I could start with my complete bike weight
and start subtracting all the other items.

Anyways any advice would be appreciated for this biking newbie on a diet.

Hi, I have got two GT's. A Zaskar and the latest addition to the gt collection: a 20" Backwoods. The frame is made from 7005 Al. I think it is the same type of frame as yours. The frame weighs without hanger and brake studs a nice 2.2 kilo's.

So yeah, you could say that when changing the frame you could loose lots of grams!

I'm building up my zaskar as a WW project. it is going to be sub 9 kilo!

Titec pork rinds grips - potential to lose 100g over stock grips at minimal cost

Maxxiss flyweight tubes approx 85g each. Potential to save 150g over stock tubes at minimal cost

lightweight tyres - depending on terrain and mud etc - a 350g to 400g tyre (conti twister super sonic or Nokian NBX lite) will save you potentially 400g over a standard mtb tyre set.

Dusted74 bolt-on skewers? cheap ($35 posted) and likely save you another 100g (ish)


Upgrades above could shed approx. 750g for a cost of around £100 UK


tuning from here is going to hit the wallet a lot harder. With a more complete bike spec it would be easier to make suggestions. . .

I have an inexpensive 3.5 lb frame on the way and I will get the
grips, tubes, tires mentioned to shed some weight for low cost.

I'm looking forward to getting some nice riding in this weekend
and I hope everyone else here does as well.

3.5lbs is a tidy weight if it can be had at a cheap cost.

thats around 1,588g yes?
