9 speed cassette on a 8 speed rig?
Moderator: Moderator Team
Can I use a 9 speed cassette on my 8 speed set up?
My current cassette is warn and needs to be replaced. I'd like to slowly upgrade the parts to a 9 sp.
Can I adjust the derailer so it doesnt use the smallest gear?
Sorry about the stupid question, I don't want to waste $80-$100 on another XTR M950 if I can slap on a M960.

No, you can't
9 speed uses smaller cogs. The chain has to be smaller too. Better save a bit longer and get yourself the full setup!

no, not necesary
only rear mech, chain and rearshifter. Most modern rings are already smaller.

You can use 9 speed chainrings with 8 speed. But you can not use 8 speed chainrings with 9 speed.

that's chainrings, not cogs?

? sure you can. Buddy of mine uses an ancient TA-crank (when that was built it was still the time of friction-shifted 7spd) with Campagnolo 10-speed without any problems.
I run a Campa 10-speed setup with a 9-speed DA chain and a FSA Shimano 9-speed crank.
That whole compatibility is a little overrated, if you ask me. There are issues, but they concern shifters, rear derailleur and cogs.
There may be exceptions, but cranks are typically not a problem.
