I was wanting to get new disc brakes for my ht and was just enquiring about what you all thought of:
1. Hayes HFX mag plus 375g £155
2. Hope mono mini 375g £110
3. Formula B4 SL 310g £130

I'm looking for a solid performer.

I also wanted to Know if 160/ 140 would be large enough for xc duties?

I've heard hayes are too expensive, not worth the extra pounds/weight.
Hope seem to be reliable but are quite heavy.
Formula are super light but magnesium caliper can corrode and parts can be hard to get.

I use the Hope Mono Mini and find them excellent. The build quality is superb. 160/140mm discs are fine for XC (they are much more powerful than the previous Mini). You could upgrade to Goodridge hoses to get more pwer. Mine weigh in at 368 and 360g with Ti bolts and 160/140mm discs for front and rear respectively.

I've heard negative things about Formula's, particularly the brake lever parting company from the lever body because of the failuare of a poorly designed plastic component that holds everything together :?

Excellent choice

I changed the caliper mount bolts to Ti and the lever bracket bolts to alu.
You can (I think) change the disc mount bolts to Ti too, but I didn't do this down to cost as much as anything...
I got them from here: http://www.tastynuts.com/site/frames/frameset_shoponline.htm
