Looking at a custom frame for my wife. She's quite short and has not been well served by stock sizes. It won't be a pure WW build for budget reasons, but it will definitely be very "weight conscious". I mostly know road builders. Who do you like for MTB?

Do you (or your wife) have a preference for material? Steel, Aluminium, titanium?

From the photos I have seen online, I am a fan of Stinner, Caletti and Black Cat. But there are others like Rock Lobster or Breadwinner that make interesting bikes.

I haven't ridden them, but naked bikes get a lot of attention here in bc...

I think she's material agnostic. Fit, quality, snappy handling, weight are the priorities. I've ridden wonderful bikes in all materials (steel, alu, Ti, carbon), and frankly I think the build has more impact on the ride than the tube material. Her road bike is Ti. We live in New England (USA), where the trails are narrow, heavily rooted/rocky, and full of short/steep grades. The swoopy dirt trails of the West Coast just don't happen here (not much, anyway). A builder that gets that would be great.

Given your location and type of local trails and given you already got one, Zanconato might be a look, alternatively 44 Bikes might fit what your wife is looking for. Both mention that their design style is suited to east coast style trails with quicker handling to deal with tight technical trails.

Just as a throw in, not as 'sexy' as having your own frame made.

My daughter is pretty short and we struggled to find a frame for her, we found that some of the jump style frames worked very well, they gave the right cockpit sizing and with a suitable headangle made a good nippy XC bike when properly built up with XC type parts. In my daughters case we used a Scott Voltage YZ frame (designed to be run geared), the short stays made it very nimble and jump bikes don't run shallow head angles.
