Converting Scott Scale from 2 x11 to 1 x 11
Moderator: Moderator Team
Semi new to mountain biking after riding road for 35 years. After borrowing from friend his mountain bike for several years just purchased Scott Scale 710. It comes with XT 2 x11 with 11- 40 rear cassette. Thinking of switching to 1 x 11 with 10 x 42 cassette. To make the change do I just need a new 1x11 crankset using same BB ? Can I just swap the cassette to a 10 x 42 or will I need an adaptor XO drive ????

As said. Keep it simple. Just buy a narrow-wide ring for your crankset. Just match the bolt pattern.
To start just use the 11-40 cassette. If you find you need more low end climbing get the XT 11-46.
11-46 and 10-42 is practically the same spread of gears. Tailor what rollout you want that spread to cover with ring size.
Most people use 32 ring with 10-42 cassette. With 11-46 cassette a 34 ring is slightly easier gearing, a 36 ring is slightly harder gearing.

I think that bike has a XT 8000 crank and an XT 8000 cassette, My advice would be to buy a OneUP single chainring, and if you want a wider range than the 11-40, you can change that to an 11-45.

But the OP can find what works for him
Have you checked if your CarbonTi chainring has the full narrow/wide pattern on the inside of the chainring? You can read about my issues with one of their rings here:
