Prototype of Titanium-Carbon Front Hub

This is still in the research & development stage, but I intend to produce a Carbon-Titanium Hub. Designed using CAD this hub will feature:
-Patented Inter-locking of Titanium into Carbon for Maximum Strength
-Centre piece of certified Carbon
-Dimensions similar to DT Swiss Hugi 240
-Specialty Sealed Titanium Ceramic Bearings
-Multidirectional laying of Carbon fibre strands
-Service friendly design

and a wide variety of options:
-Colors:Clear Coated, or Anodized Black (Titanium Section)
-Spoke Holes:16,18,20,22,24,26,28,30,32
-Axle:Titanium or Steel

The current weight of this hub is 57 grams!

I will be producing a few prototypes before this Hub is manufactured to achieve the best possible results. This has past all of the necessary tests under CAD stress analysis. But, real-life tests will need to be done.

I will be approaching several companies to get this made, however producing them here, in New Zealand may be an option.

This picture that I have included is not of the current design, but one of the previous - This is to provide a brief idea.

I will keep this website updated with the progress of this design.

If you have any suggestions for this concept, please let me know.

whoa! good news! And very light too. 8) I hope it will work out fine. I'ts always nice to see people making their own solutions to problems! It gets even better, when you read the story. Sounds pretty good to me.

A couple of ideas: how about a Aluminum axle?

Anodized Ti is weaker, and more britte, than non-chemical finished Ti surfaces- and as such the flange would be more likly to crack.

Flange/ Hole/ Bearing placement design need work.

For advice PM me

great to see a young Kiwi making it happen. You may want to check with some of the machine shops in Auckland working with the america's cup team's. They will have precision equipment and access to some of the top materials.

PM me and I will get you a contact in the America's cup camp.

Thanks for your input...

I suggest to make a 36 hole in stead of 22/26and 30

36 Hole is too many, most people enthusiastic about light bikes don't use 36 hole rims that often.

Thanks Frankie-B! You said it for me! I have redeveloped the titanium piece, and done some strength tests on different dimensions for the carbon piece.

Send me a P.M. of your contact address- You can test one once they are ready!

I hope to have the design finished within the next 3 weeks.

To get the best results - I will be making the pieces of different materials and testing them.

If you had a few options of Axles with the purchase of this hub, what would you choose? and for what reason?

Possible Options:
Beryllium
Titanium
Cold finished 7068 T6511 (ZeroG's metal)
Aluminium
Steel

thanks :P

I'd also Add myself to the list of volenteers to test your hub.

I do 7,500 miles a year road and around 1,000 miles a year off road XC.

Yes 36 is much, but I've never seen a 22 hole rims and I tought 36would be more used than 22.
