Which stem for XC?
Moderator: Moderator Team
Looking for a reasonably priced, reliable XC stem that's on the lighter side of the scale.
So doesn't need to be all out no expense spared weight weenie stem, but something thats light but will last and won't break on me.
I weight under 185lb fully geared, just do XC, no jump or drop off (for more than a few inches), ride a carbon HT 29er.

Absolutely. Pretty much the default WW value stem. Only other real light and cheap option I found is Lyti from Dulight.fr

Very happy with my UNO, 70mm and came in at 94g, dropped that to 88g with a Tibolt set for £10 off evilbay (used the bolts from the Uno to swap out the rusty ones on my commuter, so it was a good value swap).
Impoverished weight weenie wanna-be!

I'll add one point, longer stems put your weight forward, relative to your front axle and front tire contact patch. The more forward you weight is in this regards, the more likely you are to tip over the front of the bike - or endo. Way back in the day I had an xc bike with a 140 mm stem, and I thought it was so cool. I went over the bars like crazy on the thing, riding that bike was a death trap.
No issues with my Uno in -17 120. Never felt a lack of stiffness, good clamp, it does as it should and holds the bars to the fork.

I'm currently using a Hylix stem, bought from eBay. Probably not used and tested by as many riders as the Kalloy is, but it is a bit cheaper, and I think it's also a bit lighter. I've had no problems with mine, but I'm not really hard on parts though.
I didnt know wren sports existed until a few months ago. 76g & US$60. Really happy with mine

That Wren stem is definitely nice for it's price! Do you know if the weight is listed with steel or Ti bolts?
