I'm considering building up a fatbike for winter commuting. My budget would be under $1000. The only thing I really have in mind is that I want it to have mechanical disc brakes and a hard fork. Both are to save money and they work better in the cold. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

I'd check out the Fat Bikes forum on MTBR.

They have a 3000+ post thread about Chinese carbon fatties.

FWIW, I bought my 29er frame and CX frame from Peter at xmcarbonspeed.com. If I build up a fatty, I'll go through him.

Frame and fork is what he's saying, I think.

There are plenty of options out there, well below that threshold.

I'm looking to see how cheap I can build a bike that will be an abused commuter. It will see lots of salt and grit over the winter so I want it to be precious. My plan is to use as many spare, used and cheap parts as possible. I can also build my own wheels should that help keep costs down.
Let's start with the frame, how cheap do they get?

I might be coming at this from the wrong angle. Why are fat bikes so expensive?

Hmm. I'm looking to get one too. A quick search on the UK ebay for "fatbike" shows you can get a fully built one for £283. Seems dirt cheap to me. Especially in the context of WW.

That being said, the carbon frames alone go for over £400. I guess it's a question of if you really need a carbon one?

Interesting link. It's not often you see the phrase "weighing in a svelte 22kg" on a WW forum

It must be a pain to get that thing moving, but once its got some speed, it will just carry on over anything
