Shimano XTR M987 brakes VS XTR M9000 Race Brakes?
They seem very similar...
Actual weight differences? Performance difference? Pads cross compatible?

The piston's are also different between the two. If I remember correctly, the 987 uses a ceramic piston, whereas the 9000 uses a carbon phenolic piston. In reality you probably won't ever tell a difference, but supposedly the 9000's handle heat better. I've also noticed the 9000 levers are fairly flexy compared to the 987 levers leading to a mushy feel, in my opinion. I had the 987's on my last bike and ended up going for the 9020's on the new bike just because I felt like the levers had a better feel than the 9000's.
I have both & indeed the M9000 levers are a little bit more flexy as the M987. I guess this is because of the narrower clamp. This behaviour is just visible, in performance I cannot feel any difference between these two.
The M9000 looks better
