It is not the bearings that are crap per se- the jaws and release on the Xpedo are crap compared to XTR 980.
I used the top end Xpedo for about 4 months last year- Off-loaded them to someone who was more weight weenie than I- went back to XTR.

Those reviews refer to a pretty old version with one bearing one bush IIRC. They are now cartridge bearings all round which is a huge improvement over the crappy lose ball bearing and finnicky preload design of the XTR

I used normal Shimano cleats rather than the supplied Xpedo ones if that perhaps makes a difference but haven't had any issues like that. If anything the Xpedo give a much nicer connection between shoe and pedal and feel a lot less "icy" than XTR when covered in muck. XTR was 980 which might also make a difference as most people seem to dislike these but loved the 970's
