Sure. You can remove the damper, saving a couple hundred grams. If you're going to do this, might as well save your pennies and go the Lauf route instead. Much lighter than a damper-less SID, and more or less the same thing.
You can also buy significantly lighter thru axles for them.

Yes, it will. There's a reason suspension components have rebound and compression adjustment.
The lauf has no damping, removing the compression damper from a SID and save about 80g, you can also drop the fluid level to just enough to keep the rebound immersed and that saves about 50g, you'll still be better off than the Lauf as you'll have an adjustable spring and rebound damping (and the small amount of compression damping the rebound provides).
