I currently run a Thompson setback post (free with frame) on my Spec M5 HT '04.

I'm 175lbs and ride XC.

I'm keen to get the weight down. Which posts would you recommend for less than £100.

My bike is a HT and I run RC-31 rigid carbon forks. I'm thinking that carbon post is the way forward to get as much vibration damping as possible as its a HT.

Given my stange size of the Spec frame I'll need shims for USE carbon. They weigh in at 22g (I think). Is there a better option?

I woudn't opt for shims. The experience that i have with a shimmed post is that the post wasn't gripped good by the shim. I ended up serveral mm. lower after a few k's. You can really feel that.
Why don't you use the tune seatpost. It's light and should be availible in youre diametre.

Good luck!

I had a USE alien carbon with a shim on my Manitou and it did the job without any problems.

shim is ok but do not grease between the seat-post and the shim. its alright to grease between top tube and the shim. :D

Easton EC70 in 30.9. Has a good setback if you are used to the thompson. I use them on all my bikes except for my 29er which has a real long seatpost due to frame geometry. never had one break and easy to adjust. Be sure to mark the angle you have your seat set at for when you want to change saddles.
