So I'm mainly a road cyclist but am going to upgrade my old v braked trek4300 to something for XC trails in and around bristol, ashton court, Leigh woods etc. budget of £1200. Where on earth to start ?! Pauls cycles have some good last model bargains , I'm cool with buying online as I'm a reasonable mechanic , I hear 26 is out of date now, that's how out of touch I am genuinely! Please don't flame, genuine request here for support as I'm a road biker historically. I'm 6ft, 13st 7lb.

FS or Hardtail?

The Boardman hardtails are excellent value, or look at the Anthems on Pauls for a good FS, the SX with longer travel forks is a great trail bike.
