Sorry if this topic has already been broached, but has anyone seen a listing of the new Shimano Xt M8000 component weights?
I've seen some websites that built up a bike with the new XT group, but didn't bother to weigh them beforehand....

You're going to have a hard time finding independent weights, since the groupset isn't available yet. I'm pretty sure Shimano's put some stringent requirements on anyone they've blessed with a groupset.

Thanks. I thought that be the case. I was wondering if all the XT stuff is still considered to be in the "pre-production" phase by Shimano...

No, I think it's considered to be in the "production" phase, but hasn't been released. As far as I've seen, no one has gotten their hands on the 1x or 3x groups, though (only 2x).

Yep. I think Shimano still considers the 2x as their XT and XTR "sweet spot". I'm looking at buying the 2x Xt grouppo and a separate 34t 1x chainring. Good to have options. I like the steel teeth on their 1x chainrings. Shimano still comes out with some pretty clever stuff.

The big question for me is the weight of the 11-40T and 11-42T cassettes on offer. The whole industry narrative of 1x is about reducing complexity and weight. Yet in order to provide an adequate gear range, Shimano is upping the large sprocket to 42T, which consequently increases the cassette weight. Given the XTR 11-40T cassette weighs 331g, we can expect the XT 11-42T to weight at least 400g.

This is a bit meh when you consider a 11-34T cassette weighs 250g and coupled with a 2x or 3x drivetrain, you have greater gear range than 1x11 will ever have, and the overall groupset weight is almost the same...

If you want light weight use the SRAM X01 or XX1 10-42 cassette; that with the XD driver will reduce weight quite a bit from Shimano 11 cog cassette. It works with XTR 11speed so it should work with the XT 8000 shifter and rear derailleur.

According to german shop bike-components:
- cassette 11-40 : 428 g
- cassette 11-42 : 445 g
- shifters: 244 g
- RD (short/long cage): 271/275 g
- FD: 121-151 g (various options of pulls and clamps)

Not very light I would say.

Whereas a SRAM X01 10-42 cassette is 275g. This is a weight weenie forum, right?

Thanks for posting this info!
Oh dear, 445g is a terrible weight... of course we would all run XX1 or X1 cassettes if we could afford. I have to say I was hoping for a better weight on the cassette.

Wow. Pretty surprising. They definitely had enough development time to come out with some with some lighter XT components. Almost like Shimano has given up on their MTB segment.

Shimano seems to want to dictate what components the public uses versus developing, engineering, and manufacturing the components the public wants to use. They have been dragging their feet stubbornly on the 1x drivetrains. They're only hurting themselves though.

Thats pretty heavy for a cassette...but you have to consider the price also. There is a reason why it's so much cheaper than the SRAM cassettes. A big benefit of the Shimano cassette is not needing a different hub body. Its good for people with a rear hub that is not XD compatible.

Also, what do you expect from an ~$80 cassette (street price)? You're comparing it to a $300-$400 top of the line XX1 cassette, which isn't really fair at all. The low end Sram cassette is pretty heavy as well.

When you look at the weight of the XTR 11 speed cassette (which is already much heavier than the XX1 cassette), it's clear the all steel XT, with a larger 42T cog, is going to weigh a lot more. There is only so light you can go with traditional cassette design with cogs on a carrier, especially if it's steel.
