Any DT Swiss XR331 Builds?
Moderator: Moderator Team
Hi all,
I'm looking to build up a set race wheels for the upcoming XC race season (my mind is a few months ahead of the calendar). I was wondering if anyone had experience with XR331 rim from DT Swiss? It seems great in the gram/$. Has anyone built up a set of these rims? Also does anyone know the internal width? I was hoping to do 32f/32r with 350s and Sapim lasers to hit around 1400g for my Scott Spark 730.

20mm
380g for a 29er, same as a ZTR Crest which I think I'd take in preference, (or LB carbons for reduced weight) no specific nipples for example.
With those parts on a 29er wheel (?) you wont be near 1400g, somewhere about 1530-50g

I have some short experience but witch 26'' version. They were light and stiff. I had 28H on front and 32 on rear with 240sF and 350sR DT revo spokes. Set like mine weight around 1380/1390 grams. I think they are some good option for wheelset. Many, many riders use ZTR,but in my opinion DT is always DT. You will have FULL DT set:)
@ TheRookie, Thanks for internal. I'm on a 27.5 should I should still be on target for weight sans tape and valves running 15mm front and 142x12 rear. I guess i need to bump the weight up a bit for the dt swiss nipples/washers.
EDIT: It looks like I will have to use the 350 centerlock or you're right the wheels will definitely be in the 1500's
@ bikemaniack , thank you for the first hand experience. I was thinking possibly 28h front to save a bit of weight as well. I guess i will have to go with revs or aerolites rather than lasers to keep it full DT.

Hi’
For my hardtail 29er I have a pair of XC wheels build with DT Swiss XC331. They have been in use for approx. 8 months and I am very satisfied and find them light and stiff (compared with ZTR Crest 27.5’). Great value for the money! Mine are follows setup;
DT Swiss 240s
DT Swiss XR331
Sapim CX-Ray
Standard yellow tape is used for tubeless setup.
Weight: 1486 gram

If you use centrelock to save weight, you often end up with heavier discs and a heavier total weight, Ashima or similar discs with Ti bolts only come in at about 76-77g, not sure of the lightest CL (never used them) but XTR are quite a bit heavier than that.

Another option to consider may be the American Classic 101 rims. 25mm external, 21mm internal width which is more than enough for me for XC. They were nearly 20g per rim under the claimed weight for me (29er version) and have been super solid. A touch more expensive but seem universally preferred to the benchmark Crests. Have to say though that the DT Swiss rims do look reasonable though

Would love to hear any more info on these, Specifically agains the crest. I do fin d the crest a little soft and as of right now they are hard to find in a 28h in Canada.
Had pretty good luck with my xr400 but it is the 12 model that doesnt set up tubless very easly with out the rim strips.
Mainly concered for easy tubless set up right now as I dont think any rim could be weaker then the crest (I have had good luck on crest so im not calling them crap)

Have a set of these in 29" - XR331 + 240s CL + DT Aerolite + DT Pro nipples - and so far they have been great. Light (1480 with valves and tape) and stiff, and I've put them already through some pretty hard terrain.
Tubeless was a breeze - used DT tape and Stan's. Mounted them with Conti tyres, X-King RaceSports and RaceKing Protections, and they both set up tubeless without any major issues and using a track pump.

Thanks.
The only thing that has me leaning to cest is the shortness of the beadhook area. I believe this allows the tire to "plump" up abit more. They are also 1mm wider internally.
I know the AC have this feature aswell but the erd will not work with current spokes I have. Im limited to dt or stans.

I using the for almost 3 seasons ( it's tha same rim like in XR 1501 wheelset, different painting),weight is about 380g. mone are 28h version. Using them with Marathon plus 1,6 tires and in my opinion 1,5'' tire is the minimum, beacouse recommended pressure is maximum 4 bars, and for 28mm tire is too little. sorry for the dirty bike, but last days were very rainy
