That is a double.
For certain parts stiffer is more important than lighter.
He likes it, but you need to reach down to the seat-tube to move the lever. That was cutting-edge in the 1940's.

Yes -- it's s double, but don't see why it wouldn't work with a triple, quad, or whatever. It just pushes the chain.
