i have a mix of mtn bike parts and trying to upgrade some while keeping the others.

i have new XTR M980 shifters. will these work with the older M952 rear derailleur and cassette? the 10-speed chain hasn't changed any? so i should be able to use new or old chain?

thx.

No cable pull is different. M980 shifter are tyring to shift 10 speed but you have a n 8 speed cassette with different sprocket spacing. In all ways it won't work.

The M952 RD is nine-speed compatible FYI.

The M950 series was the first XTR one with 9-speed as long as you have the M952/953 parts (it started off as an 8-speed group, with the parts numbered M950/M951). The 9-speed M950 group was marketed between 1999-2002.

The M960 (2003-2006) was 9-speed only and introduced disc brakes to the XTR group set (and also the failed dual control shifters)

The M970 (2007-2010) was also 9-speed only, brought back trigger shifters.

The M980 (2011-2014) introduced 10-speed.

The M9000 (2015->) introduces 11-speed and Di2.

8 and 9 speed mech's are effectively the same and interchangeable, they will also work on any number below 8, some of the lower numbered geared rear mechs will work on higher numbers (e.g. 7 on an 8) but some will run out of travel trying to span the wider cassette.

I have the Flappy shifters (XT, M765) and I love them....has to be a rapid rise rear mech though!

You can also use old road 10sp derailleurs with 9sp mountain shifters as the end to end cable pull was the same (or very very close).
