Radial lacing DS frontwheel (disc)
Moderator: Moderator Team
I was wondering if any experienced wheelbuilders have any input on this.
Im working on some new wheelsets, and thought about trying this. I would use a 2x lacing NDS, and hopefully radial, or maybe 1x lacing on the DS. Using carbon rims, Pillar 1422 flat spokes and a Novatec XD711SB hub. 32 spokes.
As far as i can tell the braking force should be handled well enough by the NDS spokes, and lacing heads out radial DS would increase the spoke tension somewhat. The alterior motive is that it will make it possible for 1 spoke length for both rear and front wheel. 1x DS would also work in that regard. I should think the hub is strong enough to handle it.
Thanks for any input

I would not do it that way. Braking forces are higher than pedaling forces. In other words, you can stop in way less distance than you can go, although peak loads with low gears on a steep hill might exceed brake torque loads for momentary lengths of time the high forces are braking are generally repeated more often. 3 x would be a much stronger wheel.
For certain parts stiffer is more important than lighter.

My wheelset with hyperlefty hub goes out of true a lot faster than any other wheel I've build using 3x.
So I would also recommend you go with 3x.

My experiment with radial lacing (non-disc side) and 2x lacing (disc side) did not go well at all. The wheel would not stay true. I rebuilt the wheel 2x all around with the same brand of spokes and had no issues.
