 Post subject: Bad chain line

i am thinking about running 1x10 on my mtb, i have a xt 785 crankset, but the chain line is pretty bad, and the arms are further out on the drive side than non drive side, is that normal?

I recently installed a Shimano MTB crankset on my cross bike.

Which appears to have a similar BB width (68mm) to your picture.

The spacers can be moved to fix your problem.

I'm not sure if that answers your original question though which refers to 1X10

From memory the typical Shimano BB setup for a 68mm shell is two spacers on the DS, and one on the NDS; pull one of the spaces out on the drive side it should fix your cross chaining issues. I had to do this on a 2 x 10 setup not too long ago - the chain line isn't perfect but it works fine across the whole range.

the bottom bracket can't be mounted then, did you just grind off the edge that is on the plastic barrel? or did you just remove it?

The Shimano MTB BB uses three 2.5mm spacers that go between the cups and the frame, if it's a road bike width of 68mm. You would need to remove the BB and move one spacer from the DS to the NDS. And reinstall. That then moves the crank 2.5mm to the left.
