I've got a set of the 2012 Formula R1s. They're pretty good brakes when they're working right--light, strong and good modulation. They've got the tight clearance issue though, and as dumb as this might sound, bleeding them every time I change the pads is a decent workaround.

If you don't want to do that, the seals can be upgraded for better pad retraction from Formula if you send them back. I'm not sure what that costs though.

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying new R1 racing.
Does anyone can confirm better clearance in 2014 model?
Cheers, Seb.

I have 2015 R1 Racing brakes. Found the 1 piece rotors unusable with all the noise. Now running Avid 2 piece and performance is good... Not great.

Rode the new XTR brakes, and If I could do it again I would choose them all day long. The performance benefit clearly outweighs the weight savings.

Better brakes = more speed through the trails and XTR is the best XC brake currently on the market.

That is perfect feedback Rich, cheers!

Will be sticking with XTR- they are just faultless bar the small added weight which I can happily overlook for their performance

Ok, bought R1 Racing week ago. They had good price on CRC. Paid 400euro with 2 rotors and full titanium hardware. RRP650euro.
I could not resist :)

I will stick with formula disc rotor and swissstop metallic pads.
We will see how it works.
Will post some updates in the near future :)

Hi.

Nice pics Rappid.

I'm using the formula two piece rotors with the original metallic pads. So far so good :) No squealing, specially on wet! With the older Rx's my friends could ear me braking at the other side of the mountain :)

That Racing lever is a work of art, I'd love it on the bike just for the way it looks, not that the XTR look shabby, but they can't compete with that look!

Hi.

The details and quality of the lever are "second to none" :)

I still prefer the semi-artesanal way of Formula and Hope brakes over the big brands.
