Has anyone tried setting up xx1 with a double in front? You could use an xtr or sram FD and shifter. Actually, a triple FD would give more shifting range and works fine on double rings. There are several options for rings, i'd probably go for 26/38t in front. It would be awesome if this could be made to work.

The XX1 rear derailleur only moves side to side, not up and down. The offset upper jockey wheel takes care of the up and down to follow the different sized cassette cogs. It is very reliant on correct chain length +/- a couple of links. If you use a double chainring setup the chain length in one of the rings will be totally wrong and the rear shifting will not work at all. I'd go as far as to say the bike wouldn't even be ridable. With chain length correct in the big ring, the upper jockey wheel will push up into the cassette when trying to ride in the little ring. With chain length correct in the little ring it won't be long enough to wrap around the big ring and anything more than about halfway up the cassette.

Completely agree with Grover... this is a pipe dream I'm afraid. At best you'll have very sub-standard shifting and be limited in gear combinations.

mmm, interesting to read this.

I do wonder how Shimano will tackle this.
Since that's the idea of their new drive line setup, which will come out around 2015.
Having a single speed sort of XX1, re-buildable to a double..........

you can use a 42t cog on your 2x10 setup if you want, but you cant go 2x11....
