 Post subject: to XX1 or not to XX1 ??

Hi,


Over Christmas, I do hope to build up my new 29er ..........

But, I do wonder, if I would stay with my XTR M-980 drive train, cogs of 11/36 and crank 22/36.
I loved this gearing when racing Trans Shwarzwald in 2012.

Would I go 28 vs 11/42 XX1 on the new build ?

As an endurance Tri athlete, I do spin around with a 98 to 105 rpm.
Have no clue what cadence I push off road.

The 2014 MTB goal is the Grand Raid in Swiss, 125km vs 5060 alti meters in 1 day.
So every gram will count, but I need to be able to climb a lot that day ;o))


What would you advice ???

Go XX1, put simply it's the best drivetrain I've ever ridden. You will be able to find gearing that works for you. I also think you will have a lower cadence when riding mtb. I ride around 100 rpm on the road and closer to 80 on mtb. If you can try out a mountain bike(preferably with a triple) now and ride the gearing ratios similar to the serious you're considering and see what works for you. Hope this helps, and sounds like it will be an awesome build regardless!

Thanks for your advice.

1 thing is decided already, My Clavicula with carbon ti rings will go and I will install a Rotor REX1 with Q rings.
Finally Rotor thus have Q rings in 22/36 and also in XX1.
Here I will throw in some extra weight wich i'm supposed to gain somewhere else ;o)

But I do love the Q factor on my road racer and time trail racer............

Will keep you posted ;o))

XX1 Crank has 156mm QF i think the smallest mtb in the market, not uber light but good QF

Go XX1 and you never go back! Also the twist shifter in my opinion is far better than trigger. I heard from the bike shop I bought my last frame/wheelset that more than 50% of high end wheelsets are being shipped with XX1 freehubs (that is not counting SRAM XX ...). I spent some time with the corporate sales girl for Shimano Canada and she said Shimano would be coming out very soon with a comparable product for XX1 since they were getting their butts kicked... she went as far as admitting that the product was superior.

i hear that Shimano will come out with someting that can easily re-build into 11x1 or x2
But it will not before end of 2014 early 2015.

A mate of me has seen it at a fair in Taiwan
