I shortened my chain, now it skips. Reasons why I shortened my chain: the original chain length was when I had a 40t large chain ring, now I only have a 30t. So I adjusted the chain length. When I had the original chain length, I thought it was too much chain and that's why I was getting chain suck.

Is the chain and/or chainring new-ish? Typically worn chainrings cause chainsuck.

Is it possible in the process of shortening the chain that you created a stiff link?

Also, on triples (and really, doubles), chains are typically shorter than ideal, to accommodate for the huge spread. Your chain may now be too short, exacerbating chainline issues.

New chainring, old chain? That could cause an issue.
Combined with less engagement on the 30T as compared to the 40T.

Everything is about the same age. The chain is a KMC X10SL.

Did you size the chain as per the relevant guides (SRAM/Shimano/Parktools - different techniques same result) or did you 'use the force'?

Like Socratease mentioned, you may have created a stiff link when shortening the chain.

Did you use a missing link to put the chain back together in the area you shortened, or just push a rivet back in? If you used a rivet, there is likely a tight link like others have mentioned.
